Obituary

Elsie Elizabeth Pipes McCaleb was born on October 3, 1930, in Bogalusa, Louisiana and died on May 21, 2023, in Winnsboro, Louisiana. Whether you knew her as 'mom,' 'Mamaw Elsie,' or 'Mrs. Elsie,' to know her was to love her. A long-time employee of Ellington Cotton Company and member of First Methodist Church of Winnsboro, Elsie was always quick with a smile and a kind, inquiring word about your life. She never met a stranger and found great joy in making personal connections. She absolutely delighted in the lives of her children and grandchildren rarely missing an important eventparticularly if it involved a sport, and she served as the biggest encourager and cheerleader. Elsie made the ordinary magical for her grandchildren, and when her grandchildren were little, they could often be found in Winnsboro making mischief, which was always allowed by Elsie, or piled into her bed listening to Elsie spin story after story about 'Snip Snip.' Words do not seem adequate to convey how spectacular Elsie was or how much she will be missed, but she will live on in the strength of her daughters and the stories of her grandchildren.Elsie is preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, Robert Donnell McCaleb, Jr., and we are certain they are having a joyous reunion. She is also preceded in death by her parents, Jard and Alice Pipes, her brothers, Calvin and JY Pipes, sister-in-law, Maureen Pipes, and niece, Alice Pipes. Elsie is survived and remembered by her four daughters and their spouses whom she considered sons: Lissa and Roy Schneider, Judy and Donnie Dampier, Susan and Rusty Reeves, and Robin and John Benge. She will be dearly missed by her grandchildren, their spouses, and her 15 great grandchildren: Laurel and Larry Crouch (Jimmy, Isaac, and Maggie), Katie and Scotty Chabert (Jack, Cecile, and Annie), Robin Kohl (Taylor), Lee Cater (Abby), Megan and Brad Parmley (Michael, Annabelle, and Samuel), Mack Dampier, Savannah and Matt Rowland (Mason, Presli, and Cade), and Kelsey McNeely (Miller). Elsie is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Teddy and JT Lee, and sister-in-law, Ann Falter, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the Plantation Manor Nursing home staff for making Elsie's last years safe and comfortable, Tillie Adams for her kindness and friendship to Elsie, and Fran Guy for being a constant, Godly presence in Elsie's life.Visitation will be held at Dennard's Funeral Home in Winnsboro, LA on May 24, 2023, from 1:00-2:00 pm with a graveside service to follow at Providence Cemetery at 2:30 pm. Pallbearers will be her beloved son-in-laws, Roy Schneider, Donnie Dampier, Rusty Reeves, and John Benge, and her two grandsons, Lee Cater and Mack Dampier.
