Mary Alice Hodge
1931-2023
A homegoing celebration for Mary Alice Hodge, 92, of Winnsboro, LA, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 1, 2023, at First Pentecostal Church of Jackson, MS; with interment following at Lakewood South Cemetery, Jackson, MS; visitation will be at the church beginning at 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service; all under the direction of Dennard First National Funeral Home - Winnsboro.
Mary, a homemaker, was born June 27, 1931, to the union of the late Sylvester Spell and the late Bonnie Sullivan Spell in Mize, MS; and passed to her heavenly reward August 28, 2023, at her residence in Winnsboro surrounded by her family.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents; husband Harles Hodge; and granddaughter Lakresha "Sissy" Gilbert.
Mary is survived by her children: Louise Maughon (Glenn), Shirley Bates (George), David Hodge (Pam), and Nila Sanders; eleven grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; Sister Sylvia Neal; brother Charles Spell (Ava); a host of other family and many friends.
"Aunt Mer", as she was affectionately known by so many, was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a prayer warrior and a mighty influence on three generations!!
Mary spent her entire life in selfless service to God, her family, and her church. She left secular employment and devoted twenty of those years being the sole caregiver and giving 24-hour care to her granddaughter "Sissy", with severe special needs, until her passing at age twenty-two. All the while, giving full attention and care and unconditional love to her husband, and every single one of her children and grandchildren.
Sis. Hodge was a charter member of The First Pentecostal Church of Jackson, where she served in many capacities throughout the decades. For many years, the Hodge house was "the place to be" for all the young people of the church. "Aunt Mer" just knew how to make a home warm, inviting and fun!! There was never a dull moment at her house. Even with older age, she continued to make her home the fun place to be for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Often staying up with them far past midnight, playing UNO and eating ice cream!! Then, up before anyone else making those famous "crumbly" homemade biscuits.
The most important thing in her life was serving God, and encouraging her children and grandchildren in their Faith And she was most effective in seeing this through!!
