Obituary

Memorial service for Phillip Ray Barton, 84, of Monroe formerly of Gilbert will be 1 PM Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Calvary Baptist Church, Gilbert, with Rev. Bobby Ensminger officiating, with a private family interment, under the direction of Dennard First National Funeral Home, Winnsboro. Visitation will be 11 AM until time of service at the church.
Phillip was born October 26, 1939, in Gilbert to the union of the late Clarence Morgan Barton and the late Agnes Aymond Barton and passed from this life on January 9, 2024, at the Carpenter House in Shreveport after a long battle with cancer.
Phillip joined the United States Army in 1957 and served at Fort Chaffee in Fort Smith, Arkansas and Heidelberg, Germany where he was a part of the 5th MASH unit. After his honorable discharge from the military, he began working for the Ironworker Association - Local #623; at the time of his death he was a lifetime member of 61 years. In 1970, Phillip received his private pilot license and had a successful career flying and was the owner-operator of his flying service Boeuf River Aviation, until his retirement in 2000. At the time of his retirement, he had over 11,000 flight hours booked. During the off season of flying, Phillip loved to squirrel, rabbit, dove, and deer hunt, as well as playing dominos at Big Dans. Phillip was also a member and founding charter member of Calvary Baptist Church since October 11, 1953.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Kay Owens Barton; parents, Clarence Morgan Barton and Agnes Aymond Barton; one brother, Leroy "Sonny" Barton; grandparents, John Early Barton and Anna Collins Barton; niece, Wendy Polo, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Survivors left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Dawn Barton Talkington and husband Michael; his son, David Barton; three grandchildren, Meagan Chaudoin, Holly Talkington DeYoung and husband Kevin, and Brittney Talkington Griggs and husband Cody; two great grandchildren: Olivia and Nolan DeYoung; two sisters; Myra Barton Calhoun and Genelle Barton Polo; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Jerry Broussard; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, a host of other relatives and friends.
At Phillips request the family ask there not be any flowers but make a donation in Phillips memory to the Oakley Cemetery Fund or to the charity of your choice.
